JPMorgan deploys JPM Coin on Ethereum for institutions

In seconds, around the clock, eligible institutions can move JPM Coin on Ethereum following JPMorgan Chase’s deployment of the dollar deposit token on the network. The move gives the bank’s institutional clients another public blockchain for payments and tokenized-asset settlement, according to Cointelegraph’s report on JPM Coin’s Ethereum expansion.

JPM Coin, which uses the ticker JPMD, represents US dollar deposits held at JPMorgan. The bank’s announcement, reported by Bloomberg, said institutional clients could already send and receive the token in seconds, 24 hours a day, on Base, the Ethereum-linked network where it first launched last year.

What changes for JPMorgan’s clients on Ethereum?

JPM Coin has been technically deployed on Ethereum mainnet, a JPMorgan spokesperson told Cointelegraph. That adds Ethereum alongside Base, giving approved institutional participants another network on which to move bank deposits onchain.

JPMorgan’s token remains restricted to approved institutional clients, even though it is issued on a public blockchain. That means you cannot treat JPM Coin as an open retail stablecoin: access is limited to participants accepted by the bank.

The token’s purpose is to represent commercial bank money onchain. Its holders can transfer funds between clients, while the blockchain records those transfers. JPMorgan’s announcement describes these transactions as taking seconds and operating around the clock, compared with conventional transfers that may take days and run only during working hours.

Why did JPMorgan choose Ethereum?

Ethereum’s liquidity and existing use among clients were factors in the choice, Kinexys Labs global head Emma Landriault told Cointelegraph. Ethereum also has an established ecosystem for tokenized assets, according to JPMorgan’s announcement.

Landriault said crypto companies could use JPM Coin for blockchain payments, while financial institutions could use it to settle trades and post collateral. These are potential uses cited by the executive; the announcement does not say every client has those services enabled.

For institutions handling tokenized assets, a deposit token on the same network can support transfers alongside those assets. JPMorgan says the Ethereum deployment extends its institutional finance offering across public blockchains. The bank has not announced broad public access to JPM Coin.

How does the Ethereum launch fit the wider rollout?

JPMorgan first made JPM Coin available to institutional clients on Base in November 2025, according to its earlier launch announcement. Base is an Ethereum Layer 2 network built within Coinbase; Ethereum mainnet is a separate network.

The bank’s expansion follows a stated plan to support more public blockchains. Cointelegraph reported that JPMorgan announced plans in January to bring JPM Coin to the Canton Network as well. The Ethereum deployment therefore adds another network to the rollout, while access remains limited to approved institutions.

For you as a market observer, the key distinction is that JPM Coin is a bank deposit token, not a general-purpose crypto asset. Its Ethereum deployment connects JPMorgan’s dollar deposits to another public blockchain, but the bank still controls who can use the token.
